Description
Dahlia
Family : Compositae (Asteraceae)
Cultivated species are named variabilis, distinguishing it from the wild forms of Mexico and Guatemala.
From midsummer through to the first frost, the dahlia blooms, from size small to dinner plate size, in every colour but blue. Its history is a proud one: Napoleon's Josephine planted the dahlia in her garden in France. After the Napoleonic Wars, it became the most popular plant in England and throughout the early 1800's, was the most popular plant across Europe.
There are 27 species of dahlia, which belong to the largest family of flowering plants (14,000 species). From these 27 species, over 57,000 forms have been cultivated.
The flower types of the dahlia are several: the chrysanthemum, the peony, the star, the pompon, the single flower, the anemone, the collerete, the waterlily, the Fimbriated, the double orchid, the formal decorative, the ball, the cactus, and the semi-cactus.
The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico. The early Aztecs used to eat the tubers for food.

I remember this one from the last time I visited. The details in the center are wonderful. They remind me of corn, which is a favorite of mine. The tones in the petals are painterly. Beautiful image. L/F
Connie Handscomb replied:
Thank you , Glenn; I really do appreciate your comments...The centre really is a bright one, with fluidity... & I can see what you mean about the corn. {It's possible there are a lot of corn lovers out there, because this seems to be a popular one } :)))
