Description
One of the ornate street lamps on Westminster Bridge in central London, with a view looking along the River Thames to the London Eye and beyond. Officially opened to the public on 9th March 2000, the Eye (also known as the Millennium Wheel) is now the most popular paid tourist attraction in the UK. The wheel has 32 capsules, each of which weighs 10 tonnes and holds up to 25 people. The whole structure is 443ft (135m) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 394ft (120m); a complete rotation takes around 30 minutes. The building on the right is part of County Hall. The current bridge was designed by Thomas Page and opened in May 1862. It is a seven-arch, cast-iron bridge, the Gothic detailing was done by Charles Barry, the architect who designed the nearby Palace of Westminster / Houses of Parliament.
